What Did You Play? “Where Have You Been, Jerk?” Edition (August 2015)
I could make excuses as to where I’ve been for the last couple of months, except it’s Nintendorks and I don’t have to*. You know our ways. Thanks to chrunck for getting antsy (ANC?) and making a thread for the previous couple months on the forum when it became clear I wasn’t gonna. BUT! I have returned. Let’s discuss what we’ve all been playing while twiddling our thumbs waiting for Metal Gear(!?) and Super Mario Maker.
*Okay fine I was masturbating, are you happy? I am!
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – Lots of my gaming lately has been done hanging out with/supervising kids at the library. They’re all pretty much fine playing this and nothing else, which is fine since 8 player support is wonderful for a group setting. I’m bad at it but nailing people with shoryukens is fun.
Tetris Ultimate (Xbone) – Perfectly Functional Tetris, which I default to when I get tired of joining in on Smash (i.e. someone picks Great Cave Offensive)
Rare Replay (Xbone) – Is it just me or does Jetpac run smoother on the N64? This is probably more accurate, either way.
Kalimba (Xbone) – Nice difficulty curve on this co-op (single and two player!) puzzle platformer. Controlling two characters at once like Chronos Twins on DS and WiiWare, but it quickly throws new kinks into the idea. Great checkpointing keeps it from being frustrating.
Spelunky (PS3) – HELL YEAH STILL GOING. I’ve long since wrung most of the novelty from this but still try to keep up with the daily challenges and still usually succumb to an embarrassing death. The replay feature added a while ago has been pretty fun. Still great to play, just routine now, and an easy default that keeps me from jumping into anything else in my backlog.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (PS3) – I will never be great at this, but it’s still entertaining. Unlocked everyone’s ending, some are more amusing than others, but all around I still MARVEL at CAPCOM’s attention to details and fan service in this. Also recently started spectating matches online as background while I mess around on the computer.
Various Sega 3D Classics (3DS) – Snagged the rest of series 1 when they went on sale several weeks ago. Been mostly playing OutRun, Super Hang-On, and Streets of Rage. Man, Streets of Rage is BULLSHIT toward the end.
And in July at Comic-Con:
Mighty No. 9 (Xbone) – Shaping up to be pretty fun, actually! The heart of Mega Man is obviously there but it plays differently with the score mechanics and the dashing everywhere is a bit more like the X games. A little bland maybe, but feels good overall.
Super Mario Maker (Wii U) – Cleared some demo level full of clown cars. Looking forward to getting the whole experience whenever!
